WHY SKY?

African SKYWhen God laid it on my heart to start an outreach, I wanted to find the perfect name for it…to encompass all that God had set it apart to be. I really prayed for God just to give me the name in a dream and that I would have complete certainty it was the right name. Even though He did not end up imparting the name to me in a dream, I believe He lead me to the SKY mission (Silia Kwa Yesu).  Here is how it came about:

I was translating words from English to Swahili because I thought a name in Kenya’s native tongue would be a great way to connect the organization with the people it was reaching out to. I was typing many words in and nothing seemed to grab me…nothing seemed to be right. On a whim and somewhat out of frustration, I started to type things into the Swahili part to be translated to English. On my third try I typed in silia. Silia ended up meaning: to entrust someone to or to empower someone. YES! This Swahili word had real potential. If written “silia kwa Yesu” the word meant: entrusted to Jesus and empowered by Jesus. This is exactly what I was looking for and my heart was filled with joy….God led me to the name for His organization.

SILIA KWA YESU

As, I stared at the phrase, I saw that the acronym was SKY. I loved the idea of The SKY Mission because it seemed to fit in with all the words that I was looking up to translate. Words that came to mind were: rise up, lifted, carried, fly, freedom, etc. All of these, at least to me, bring up imagery of the sky. I know Jesus’ heart for the orphans is to lift them up and carry them in His arms. He loves them and He seeks to free them from their oppression so they can soar. These children will rise up and be a generation that follows the Lord and changes Kenya. He has a special plan and purpose for them and the sky really is the limit.

Another thing about the word sky is that the African sky holds a beauty like no other. I believe that these children need to know they are beautiful, worthy, valuable, etc. As the beauty of the sky captivates us and moves us, the beauty of these children captivates me and moves me. I hope and pray that they begin to know they are as radiant as the African sky and that they hold onto that knowledge the rest of their days.

Alysha in KiberaENTRUSTED TO JESUS

Although Jesus has called me to care for His children, they are not my own. He is the Father to the fatherless. They are His and I need to trust Him with their lives. Since they are entrusted to Him and not to me, I have no doubt that He will nurture them, grow them, and keep them. I also know that I as I hear His heartbeat I will know what my role is in bringing them up and he will give me the knowledge and wisdom to be a mother to the motherless.

EMPOWERED BY JESUS

When you grow up with one hardship after another and live in poverty, it is very easy to lose hope and feel helpless. Many orphans, in addition to losing their parents and being poor, have little power because they are children. These children need to know that through Jesus Christ, they can have their hope restored and be strengthened. They need to know that they are not helpless but that they can have their souls and hearts made alive again when they realize they have a Father who loves them and has given them special gifts and abilities. By providing for the children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, it is the hope that they will grow up confident and bold, having a sense of self that only comes from Jesus Christ. We want them to not give up and give in to Satan and his lies. We want them to accept and take hold of the power of the blood of the Lamb
